In the early hours of Thursday September 12, Times Higher Education (THE) released its THE World University Rankings 2020, with Southern University of Science and Technology maintaining its top ten ranking in mainland China, ranking equal ninth in mainland China and between 301st and 350th in the world.
The rankings show that as an emerging university in China, SUSTech continues to perform at a high level in citations and international outlook, two of the major performance indicators used by THE. SUSTech maintains the highest score in terms of citation among all universities in mainland China, and has maintained a top three position in international outlook across mainland China. The scores of the other three indicators (Teaching, Research, and Industry Income) have had an average increase of 42.72% compared to last year’s data.
This year, the THE World University Rankings 2020 had 1369 universities ranked in 92 countries and regions across the world, including 125 universities from China (including Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan Province).

The publication provides the definitive list of the world’s best universities, evaluated across teaching, research, international outlook, reputation and more.
The Times Higher Education World University Rankings are the global performance tables that judge research-intensive universities across all their core missions: teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook, by using 13 carefully calibrated performance indicators to provide the most comprehensive and balanced comparisons in order to rank over 1300 of the best universities in the world from 92 countries and regions around the world.
The performance indicators are grouped into five areas: teaching (the learning environment); research (volume, income, and reputation); citations (research influence); international outlook (staff, students and research); and industry income (knowledge transfer).
The Times Higher Education World University Rankings, QS World University Rankings, US News World University Rankings, and the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) are recognized as the world’s four leading university rankings.
