On June 3, Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) has shown its importance in higher education across the Asian continent. Times Higher Education (THE) has ranked SUSTech 33rd, up eight places from 41st from 2019, and moving up to 8th from 10th in mainland China, in its Asia University Rankings 2020.
The THE Asia University Rankings 2020 was held in a virtual ceremony. They ranked 489 universities in 30 countries and regions across Asia, including 81 universities from mainland China.
In addition, SUSTech was shortlisted for three different categories for the THE Awards Asia 2020, for International Strategy of the Year, Student Recruitment Campaign of the Year, and the THEDataPoints Merit Award. These awards reflect the development of SUSTech’s global vision and the hard work of its senior leadership and management team. The results of these awards will be announced in autumn in a separate virtual event.
2020 is the tenth anniversary of the establishment of SUSTech. SUSTech has enjoyed the strong support of the Ministry of Education, Guangdong, and Shenzhen, as it has established innovative schools and colleges. SUSTech has gathered a first-class faculty team as part of the development of its talent pipelines. It has created world-class academic and scientific achievements as it continues to increase its global influence and reputation.
This year represents a new decade of progress for SUSTech. It will continue to build a world-class research university that supports the development of Shenzhen as a pioneering demonstration zone and the industrial transformation of the Greater Bay Area.
The rankings show that as an emerging university in China, SUSTech continues to perform at a high level in citations and international outlook, two of the major performance indicators used by THE. SUSTech maintains the highest score in terms of citations among all universities in mainland China and has maintained a top-three position in international outlook across mainland China.
The Times Higher Education (THE) Asia University Rankings are the only global performance tables that judge research-intensive universities across all their core missions: teaching, research, knowledge transfer, and international outlook. The Asia University Rankings use the same 13 carefully calibrated performance indicators to provide the most comprehensive and balanced comparisons, trusted by students, academics, university leaders, industry, and governments. However, the weightings are specially recalibrated to reflect the priorities of Asian institutions.
The performance indicators are grouped into five areas: teaching (the learning environment); research (volume, income, and reputation); citations (research influence); international outlook (staff, students and research); and industry income (knowledge transfer).
The THE Awards Asia 2020 is known as the Oscars of Higher Education. The “International Strategy Award of the Year” is awarded to an institution for outstanding success in building institutional partnerships, overseas operations, and a strategic approach to international staff and student recruitment. The “Student Recruitment Campaign of the Year” will reward a college or university that creatively displays its brand as part of its enrollment promotions to significant effect. The “THE DataPoints Merit Award” honors a university whose research excellence outpaces the recognition of their strength among the 10,000+ academics polled across the globe in the annual THE Reputation Survey.
The THE World University Rankings, QS World University Rankings, US News World University Rankings, and the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) are recognized as the world’s four leading university rankings.
