On Oct.14, 2020, a grand gathering was held to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the establishment of the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone in Shenzhen, south China’s Guangdong Province. Chinese President Xi Jinping, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, attended the gathering and delivered an important speech on Wednesday.

President Xi Jinping said yesterday that Shenzhen has made five historic leaps forward since the establishment of the special economic zone (SEZ) 40 years ago. Xi stressed the valuable experience from the development miracles of the SEZs, including Shenzhen.

He called for efforts to explore a more flexible policy system and a more scientific management system in terms of domestic and foreign trade, investment and financing, finance and taxation, financial innovation, and personnel exit and entry.

SUSTech Chairperson Yurong GUO and President Shiyi CHEN were invited to join the grand gathering.

The University prepared three venues for the faculty members and students to watch the event’s live broadcast, including the lecture halls in No.1 Research Building, Lynn Library, and No.11 Student Dormitory. The SUSTech leadership and senior officials attended as well.

After listening to President Xi’s speech, SUSTech’s faculty members and students have expressed that they are honored to have the opportunity to witness the miracle of Shenzhen. In the future, they hope to make more contributions to the city’s growth.
