SUSTC’s students achieve brilliant results again in University Physics Competition

On January 17, 2016, the results of the 6th University Physics Competition were unveiled. A team directed by Yang Jun from the physics laboratory of South University of Science and Technology of China (SUSTC) and made up of Chen Diqing, Li Cequn and Zheng Candi, three juniors from the Department of Physics, SUSTC, and a team made up of Yan Mingqi, Shi Kaige and Sun Kebin, three sophomores from the same department won the silver medal and the bronze medal respectively. This was the second time that SUSTC’s students had participated in this competition.

Sponsored by the American Physical Society and American Astronomical Society, University Physics Competition is an international competition contest for undergraduate students. This year, this competition ran from November 13 to 15, 2015. All teams must analyze real-world scenarios using the principles of physics, write formal papers describing their work and submit papers to the organizing committee. A total of 143 teams from universities and colleges around the world submitted papers. 73 teams chose “Problem A-Terraforming Mars” and 70 teams chose “Problem B- Golfing around a Tree”. Eventually, two teams (1.4 percent), 25 teams (17 percent), 41 teams (29 percent) and 75 teams (52 percent) won the gold medal, the silver medal, the bronze medal and the accomplishment award respectively.

SUSTC’s another two teams (one team made up of Lin Rongyu, Lei Weihua and Liang Tong, and the other made up of He Rui, Zhang Jian and Zheng Nan) won the accomplishment award.
