On March 21st, Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) held the fifth lecture of the “Modern Science, Technology and Your Love of Country” series. Professor Deng Weiwei from the Department of Mechanics and Aerospace Engineering talked about “The Pursuit of Dreams Enlightens Your Life.” Professor Deng shared his experience about giving up his tenure in the United States before returning to China to teach at SUSTech. Director Wang Dejun of the Political Education and Research Center hosted the lecture.

Professor Deng Weiwei’s research group primarily focuses on the experimental fluid dynamics of micro-scale electrified jets and droplets. His research group also studies droplet-based printing and manufacturing of flexible electronics. In 2017, he wrote the story about his personal experience of how he gave up his tenure at Virginia Tech and joined SUSTech with his entire family. The story went viral on the Internet and was subsequently covered by local and state news media.

Professor Deng encouraged students to not only to be pioneers in the new era bravely, but also to join a research laboratory as early as possible. He also urged the students to spend more time on their studies and scientific research. He used outstanding SUSTech graduates Song Libo and Guo Tianzi as examples when he emphasized the importance of university students being ambitious, skilled and persevering.

During the Q&A session, students asked many questions, including the problems of university life and how to enter research laboratories. Professor Deng provided some guidance to them in detail.
