Last weekend, the Cultural Heritage Laboratory of the Social Sciences Center at Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) launched an archaeological tour in Shenzhen. Many undergraduate students were active participants in this event.

The laboratory visited the Chen Clan Cemetery on the new Shenzhen campus of Sun Yat-sen University and the recently discovered Neolithic site in Sanwei, Bao’an District. Xie Peng, a researcher at the Shenzhen Cultural Relics and Archaeology Institute and technician Liu Yunliang went into detail about the excavations of the two archaeological sites. They also discussed the basic principles and applications of stratigraphy, the study of rock layers. The students asked numerous questions and used the traditional Chinese archaeological exploration tool, the luoyang shovel.

The Cultural Heritage Laboratory of SUSTech launched the Taigong Plan this semester. By setting up various interest groups, SUSTech will spread cultural heritage knowledge to our students. They aim to increase their interest in their own culture and heritage, while encouraging interdisciplinary learning. In the future, the Cultural Heritage Laboratory will organize more cultural heritage-related activities for all students.
