March 28th saw Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) hold the 6th Lecture of the Modern Science, Technology and Your Love of Country lecture series. Prof. Tang Tao, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Vice President of SUSTech, brought the report entitled “Modern Education and Your Love of Country.” Director Wang Dejun of the Political Education and Research Center hosted the lecture.
Prof. Tang Tao started at the establishment of the Imperial University of Peking. As the first national university in Modern China, it has trained a group of outstanding talents who went on to study abroad. That group ultimately went on to make significant contributions to China such as the father of the Chinese railway, Jeme Tien Yow (Zhan Tianyou) and diplomat Tang Shaoyi. He also talked about the resumption of the gaokao after the Great Cultural Revolution in 1977. In 1978, the country’s first batch of students went studying abroad, and the leaders sent them off at the airport. Even in difficult times, China has seen rapid development of a new, modern education.
Prof. Tang Tao believes that the improvement of education helps the development of science and technology, while the power of science and technology is a key factor of rejuvenating the country. He explained how a scientist can show their love for the country and it is not only expressed by words. They can try hard to improve their research ability to make new contributions, full of the spirit of searching the unknown world.
