Recently, Jiang Lansheng and Tan Jingchun from the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS) came to Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) to jointly give the 212^th lecture in the SUSTech Lecture Series. They spoke about the record, definitions, examples, purposes and usage of verbs in the Chinese dictionary. Director of the Center for Chinese Language Education Li Lan presided over the lecture.

Ms. Jiang Lansheng was the former CASS vice Dean and now is the Director of Head of the National Social Science Fund Language Discipline Review Team. She used to focus on modern Chinese grammar before turning to dictionary research. She is the chief editor of the 11^th and 12^th edition of Xinhua Dictionary as well as the 6^th and 7^th edition of Modern Chinese Dictionary.

Mr. Tan Jingchun is currently the vice Director of the Research Center for Dictionary Compilation under CASS. He mainly studied lexicography, lexical semantics and modern Chinese grammar. He was the deputy editor of 6^th and 7^th edition of Modern Chinese Dictionary and the editor of the 5^th edition of Modern Chinese Dictionary.

Ms. Jiang Lansheng introduced the principle of compiling a modern Chinese dictionary and the interpretation method. She pointed out that compiling a dictionary is a highly professional and interdisciplinary project. She hoped that students can make good use of the dictionary to help them learn more.

Mr. Tan Jingchun systematically explained the meaning of the verb, before expounding on the role and significance of verbs through lexicographical compilation and revision. He emphasized that while the semantics of words can be very complicated, interpretation should be based on, not constrained by its methods.

During the Q&A session, teachers and students were interested in the topics and asked many questions.
