SUSTC Lecture of Electron Microscopy by Chief Scientist of American BNL Zhu Yimei
| 04/15/2016

On the Afternoon of April 13, 2016, American BNL TEM expert Professor Zhu Yimei was invited to give a lecture on “Seeing Matter from Ultra-small to Ultra-fast and to Multi-dimensions with Electrons” to SUSTC teachers and students at Lecture Hall 110. Professor Zhu made all attending teachers and students have a more intuitive and much deeper understanding of electron microscopy by introducing origin, development and future direction of electron microcopy and integrating his own study and scientific research experience in the lecture.

At the beginning of the lecture, the host Director of Scientific Research Department Zhao Yusheng awarded SUSTC Lecture Certificate for 66th Speaker to Professor Zhu Yimei and showed warm welcome to his coming on behalf of SUSTC.

Looking BNL as a clue, Professor Zhu briefly introduced original of the first electron microscope and the development of electron microscope and optical microscope in past fifty years and further demonstrated the significance of development of electron microscope technique and the study and R&D of electron microscope by comparing electron microscope with optical microscope.

Referring to industry prospect, Professor Zhu said, future development of electron microscope technique is mainly embodied in three aspects: orthotopic operation microscope, multidimensional stereo microscope and ultrafast electron microscope.

“In future, electron microscope will no longer purely ‘take photos’, instead, it can observe and analyze change of particles, find and sum up its characteristics.” Professor Zhu stated, new electron microscope will have the space and time advantage to distinguish the movement of different particles, helping us understand working mechanism of the particles in relevant reactions.

At the end of the lecture, Professor Zhu reviewed development history of electron microscope again, and it is not difficult to find that constant improvement of electronic imaging technology and constant upgrade of electron microscope make us see the faster and smaller world clearly.

At the part of communication and questions asking, Profession Zhu Yimei made a heated discussion with attending teachers and students about the influence of heating and laser on lattice, half-cell detection mechanism and working environment of lithium battery, advantage and disadvantage of X ray and electron, orthotopic video resolution and information catching at phase change stage and other professional problems.
