Last week, the 8th lecture in the “Modern Science, Technology and Your Love of Country” lecture series saw Professor Liu Qingsong of the Department of Ocean Science and Engineering give a lecture on the topic of “21st Century, Ocean Era.”
Professor Liu Qingsong first spoke about his research field, which is marine geology. His research focuses on the study of magnetic properties, an interdisciplinary and multi-method approach. His scientific research system requires examination of magnetic extensions in both a vertical and horizontal sense. He said that to develop their own long-term academic development, students first need to lay a solid educational foundation before building their own horizontal and vertical, or T-shaped, research platform.
Professor Liu Qingsong reflected on his own experiences to summarize four major periods of personal development. He encouraged students to take a serious look at their lives, in order to persevere in their life direction. Professor Liu Qingsong also examined human development and civilization through the centuries and its impact on the Earth and oceans. From an evolutionary perspective, the audience was shown a vivid reproduction of the impact of human civilization on the global environment. He said that the ocean is the key to development in the 21st century. He hoped that everyone would cherish the peace, and explore the possibility of developing a marine civilization.
In the Q&A session, Professor Liu Qingsong was peppered with questions from students about global warming and scientific research methods.
