With the Youth Day approaching and to promote the spirit of May 4th Movement, listen to the voices of the youth and congregate them, on May 3, the Youth League Committee of SUSTech held a Youth Day symposium with the theme of “inheriting the spirit of May 4th Movement and realizing the Chinese Dream” in the activity room of Zhicheng Academy. Li Ming, Chairman of university council, Wang Chong, Associate Professor of Party School of CPC Shenzhen Municipal Committee had a discussion with more than 30 students representatives of the Youth League Committee, Student Union, Student Association Union, Volunteer Team, student party members and every Youth League general branch. Zhang Ling, Director of SUSTech Publicity and Public Relations Department, Xue Zheng, Secretary of SUSTech Youth Corps Committee and Director of SUSTech Students Affairs Department and other Party leaders of various departments attended the symposium which was hosted by Yang Sheng, member of SUSTech Youth League Committee.

After watching China in the 1990s—May 4th Movement, Wang Chong delivered a keynote speech entitled “Contemporary Value of May 4th Movement Spirit” which focused on the contemporary value, influence and development of the May 4th Movement Spirit. He pointed out that the spirit of May 4th Movement was the combination of individual and national spirit with the patriotism as its source, progress as the goal as well as democracy and science as the methods. He expressed that for the youth, the best way to honor the May 4th Movement was to become the pioneers and dedicators for China under the leadership of the CPC.

Later, Li Ming talked about his experience in world views, outlooks on life and life goals which were gradually established in study, in laboring in the countryside and at work to encourage students to “aim high and stay realistic”. Under the guidance of this motto, students could grow up and achieve their life goals. He hoped that all the students should be ambitious to realize their dreams wherever they are and no matter what jobs they would take. He suggested them to go into the society and practice in the grass-root departments to obtain experience as well as to pay close attention to the society, to the latest news and to the changing world yet fight against temptations.

In Q&A Session, Wang Chong, Zhang Ling and Xue Zheng shared their views with students on the dialectical unity of the reality and dreams, some students’ excessive complaint and indifference to the society and how to inherit the spirit of May 4th Movement.

Students attending the symposium remarked that they had gained a lot in the meetings and they would carry forward the spirit of May 4th Movement, comprehensively study the classic works of Chinese traditional culture and Marxism, and contribute their youth and strength to realize the Chinese Dream.
