On the afternoon of May 8, 2016, Zhicheng College at SUSTC held the 1st Award Ceremony in the Lecture Hall of No.1 Science Research Building to encourage individuals and groups that performed well in morality, recreation and study since August 2015. Li Ming, Chairman of University Council, Xia Zhihong, Dean of Zhicheng College, Xiao Guozhi, Dean of the Department of Biology and Xue Zheng, Director of Student Affairs and Secretary of University Communist Youth League attended the ceremony which was hosted by Jiang Weili, President of Students’ Union of Zhicheng College. 

At the beginning, teachers and students watched Zhicheng College 2016 Promo together. In the video, when interviewed, Chairman Li Ming spoke highly of Zhicheng College. He said: “Being led by Dean Xia Zhihong since its establishment, Zhicheng College has enjoyed an active mood. Also, this mood of promoting study and innovation is growing rapidly along with the mode of training outstanding and innovative talent, which is advocated by SUSTech. Therefore, I think we have achieved the previous goal. Zhicheng College shows a sound start.” His words were followed by a round of applause from the audience. 

After that, Dean Xia Zhihong summarized the College’s development and progress since August 2015, congratulated the outstanding individuals and groups who got awards and expressed his gratitude to college counselors for working vigorously on the frontline to educate talent. In addition, he inspired students to not only work hard and carry out academic research, but also to become future talents with organizational and leadership abilities.

The Award Ceremony bestowed 16 awards including Paragon of Study for Individual and Paragon of Study for Class by the present professors and teachers in University Communist Youth League. In all, 17 groups and 55 individuals were honored.

As the representative of award winners, Huang Keren from Class 1406 made a speech. Combined with her understanding of science, she expressed her expectation of becoming a sensible scholar with tolerance as well as passions for science and thinking. 

In the year of improving study atmosphere, to deal with the related problems on campus, the College designed and filmed a video with the collective wisdom. Themed on study atmosphere, the video was wrote, directed and acted by students themselves. In a humorous style, the video showed that a college student named “Top” played computer games, smoked and saw the mess in the laundry and reflected problems in students’ study and their daily life. The video received praise from all the students and teachers.

At last, Chairman Li Ming was invited to give an important speech in which he expressed a few expectations of the students. He said health should be their priority and encouraged them to keep doing exercise every day. He also hoped the students to develop good psychological endurance and told the students to bear in mind that no matter how hard today is, tomorrow is another day. He also suggested students to be persistent, be aspirant in politics and do their best in social participation.   

At the end of his speech, Chairman Li Ming expected students in Zhicheng College to set up a goal under the principle of honesty and take actions to realize it actively and unyieldingly. Thus, they can be accepted and trusted no matter in society or in the academic circle.

The Award Ceremony came to a close by a roar of applause. The audience all looked forward to the next year’s Award Ceremony of Zhicheng College.
