Last week, the Humanities Center at Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) held its first Campus Essay Contest named “My SUSTech Story.” Inspired by the “Writing and communication” course, participants were divided into two groups (faculty members and students). Deputy Director Yang Guo of the Humanities Center presided over the competition.

The Campus Essay Content has received contributions from teachers and students right across campus. After the first stages of the competition, the final stage saw 8 faculty members and 12 students win awards.

Dean Chen Yuehong of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences shared his writing experience with teachers and students. He believes that first-class science and engineering universities must have first-class liberal arts education. The educational goal of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences is to stimulate the writing enthusiasm and improve the writing level of the students at SUSTech. Such a goal should improve the humanistic qualities, helping students master essential language expression skills.

He added that the Campus Essay Contest aims to provide teachers and students with an opportunity to tell stories about SUSTech. Participants were able to express their feelings about their study or work. The contest focused on the writing ability of teachers and students while enhancing their mutual understanding. The competition seeks to create a positive academic campus culture.

First prize winner Zhang Yichi and third prize recipient Qu Zeyang explained the background behind their stories. They said they would continue to read and write while striving to become comprehensively developed students of the new era.

The Humanities Center intends to publish the award-winning works and will launch the second SUSTech Campus essay contest next semester.
