The 14th lecture in the Modern Science, Technology and Your Love of Country lecture series at Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) saw Vice Provost (Global Strategies) and Chair of the School of Environmental Science and Engineering give a fascinating lecture. He spoke at length about “Green Shenzhen and Beautiful China.” Director Wang Dejun of the Political Education and Research Center hosted the lecture.

Chair Zheng Chunmiao explained his insights into groundwater management and research following his decades of work in the field. He said that China, as the largest developing country in the world, has been committed to promoting environmental protection for many years. The concept of beautiful China placed an ecological civilization in a prominent position, and integrated it into all aspects of social development. It has been further solidified into the idea that green mountains are golden mountains and silver mountains, and their importance is self-evident.

Chair Zheng Chunmiao believes that the focus should be on harmony and symbiosis, and as such the core needs to be on green circular low-carbon development. The green national economy can be realized through a modern ecological industrial system. Moving in this direction would signal the arrival of the “ecological era.”

He also introduced China’s active efforts in responding to global climate change, sand dune protection, and air pollution control. China is also working hard to implement significant environmental restoration projects such as the protection of the Heihe River Basin and the restoration of Shandong Lu’s pollution-resistant land.

Chair Zheng Chunmiao finished his lecture by discussing the greening of Shenzhen. He talked about Shenzhen is a city of industry with a large population, but it does not have a lot of space nor does it have much in the way of natural resources. This means that managing its environmental resources is critical, and Chair Zheng Chunmiao used the surface water-groundwater pollution mechanism research and treatment in the Maozhou River Basin as an example.
