Earlier today, Southern University of Science and Technology launched the first Modern Art Festival, opening its summer cultural activities for 2019.

Through the rest of July, the Summer SUSTech Modern Art Festival will explore the cutting-edge integration of science, technology and art. The Summer SUSTech Modern Arts Festival seeks to be different from the Traditional Chinese Arts Festival, by exhibiting more innovative, diverse and avant-garde forms of art.

The first event of the festival will see the “BEING” Photo Exhibition take place in the Lynn Library. The exhibition opened earlier today and will run for 10 days. It records the pilgrimage of founder of Shanghai Architectural Culture Media Xue Yutao and three devout Buddhists, who traveled more than 3000 kilometers west from Chengdu in 2017.

Next week, science fiction writer Yan Bojun will give a lecture about “Science and Art.” His lecture will explore the relationship between art and science, first breaking inherent recognitions of artistic perceptual attributes before introducing the artistry in science.

The weekend of July 20 to 22 will see an electronic music workshop hosted by Qiu Zhaoyuan. The lead singer of Heart-burning Band and the founder of the Wuhan University Music Union will discuss vocal music theory and train those in attendance in various areas. Heart-burning Band will then perform a concert on the night of the 22nd, with a night of songs from the golden age of rock and roll.

To close the Summer SUSTech Modern Arts Festival, Professor Qiu Zhichun of the School of Government Management at Shih Hsin University, Taiwan Province, will give a lecture about Modern Folk Songs and Youth Literacy. His lecture will seek to explain the development of modern folk songs and their influence on young people.

The first Summer SUSTech Modern Art Festival provides an improved platform for students to contact with avant-garde artists and artistic forms while displaying modern art forms and genres. The activity will be jointly organized by the SUSTech Art Center, the Office of Communications & Public Relations and the Office of Student Affairs.
