Shenzhen Advanced Study and Training Institute of Talents Unveiled, SUSTech Awarded “Talent Scout Award” and Three SUSTech Academicians Won Funds

On the morning of October 9, 2016, the Unveiling Ceremony of the Shenzhen Advanced Study and Training Institute of Talents and the Awarding Ceremony of Talent Introduction and Cultivation Awards was held. SUSTech, for its outstanding achievements in introducing talents such as academicians and the Peacock Team, was awarded the “Talent Scout Award” and a 2.9 million yuan reward, an amount that ranked the first in Shenzhen and accounted for 58% of the total amount of rewards of Shenzhen. President Chen Shiyi accepted the award on behalf of SUSTech and was appointed Vice President of the Shenzhen Advanced Study and Training Institute of Talents. Academicians Yu Dapeng, Chen Xiaofei and Liu Ke introduced by SUSTech were awarded a job fund, rent-free housing keys and academician cultivation rewards. Leadership from the Shenzhen government including Ma Xingrui, Secretary of the Shenzhen Municipal Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC), and Xu Qin, Mayor of Shenzhen, presented the awards.

According to sznews.com, on the morning of October 9, the Unveiling Ceremony of the Shenzhen Advanced Study and Training Institute of Talents and the Meeting of the Leading Group of Talent Work of Shenzhen was held. Ma Xingrui, Deputy Secretary of the CPC Guangdong Provincial Committee and Secretary of the CPC Shenzhen Municipal Committee, Xu Qin, Deputy Secretary of the CPC Shenzhen Municipal Committee and Mayor of Shenzhen, Guo Yonghang, Member and Secretary-general of the Standing Committee of the CPC Shenzhen Municipal Committee, Ai Xuefeng, Deputy Mayor of Shenzhen, etc. attended the ceremony. Representatives from relevant municipal government organs, districts (new areas), universities, municipality-owned enterprises, central enterprises in Shenzhen, high-tech enterprises, scientific research institutes, high-level talents, the Peacock Team and provincial innovation teams participated in the activity. Zheng Ke, Member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Shenzhen Municipal Committee and Head of the Organization Department, hosted the ceremony.

The whole activity was carried in two phases. In phase one, the nameplate of the Shenzhen Advanced Study and Training Institute of Talents was unveiled, and the letters of appointments and badges for the Institute, the “Talent Scout Award” and the awards of academician job funds, rent-free housing keys and academician cultivation rewards were issued; in phase two, the Meeting of the Leading Group of Talent Work of Shenzhen was held, at which the Leading Group of Talent Work of Shenzhen listened to relevant units’ reports on the work ideas and progress of the implementation of the Measures on Promoting the Priority Development of Talents (hereinafter referred to as Measures) issued by the CPC Shenzhen Municipal Committee and the Shenzhen Municipal Government, and made deployment and raised requirements regarding the implementation of the Measures in future.

The Measures, which were issued by the CPC Shenzhen Municipal Committee and the Shenzhen Municipal Government on March 23, 2016, have raised 81 measures concerning 20 aspects and 178 policy points. Through the joint efforts of all municipal departments and district (new area) governments, the Measures have been quickly implemented. So far, 122 or 68.5% of the 178 tasks in the Measures have been implemented; 56 or 31.5% are under progress.

It’s learnt on the spot that the Shenzhen Advanced Study and Training Institute of Talents was established in Shenzhen Qilinshan Sanatorium and appointed Zheng Ke as President; Wang Wei, Liang Yongsheng and Zheng Xiuyu as Vice Presidents; Yang Huanming, Chen Shiyi, Fan Jianping, Chen Zhilie and Ma Weihua as Vice Presidents with a term of three years.

The Shenzhen Advanced Study and Training Institute of Talents mainly has five functions: carrying out advanced study on national conditions and education and cultivation of high-level talents; holding “conferences of outstanding talents” and roadshows of talent innovation projects to promote the cooperation between talents and enterprises; providing academic platforms for talents and creative idea communication platforms for makers; providing convalescent care, physical examination and healthcare services for talents; promoting the talent policies of Shenzhen and publicizing and displaying scientific and technological achievements of talents.

Since the beginning of year Shenzhen has introduced five full-time academicians, those are, Yu Dapeng, Cheng Huiming, Chen Xiaofei, Fang Binxing and Liu Ke. Yu Dapeng, Chen Xiaofei and Liu Ke were introduced by SUSTech, Cheng Huiming was introduced by Tsinghua-Berkeley Shenzhen Institute, and Fang Binxing was introduced by Harbin Institute of Technology, Shenzhen. At the ceremony, the academicians received a 1 million yuan job fund, rent-free housing keys and academician cultivation rewards.

“Huawei, BGI, Tencent and DJI all started and developed in Shenzhen. Shenzhen has put great investment in scientific research, which has made great contributions to GDP. Moreover, the livable environment is also a reason that Shenzhen attracts talents.” said Academician Yu Dapeng, who also expressed that he hoped to realize the dreams he couldn’t realize before in Shenzhen.

Academician Chen Xiaofei said in a press interview, “Shenzhen has attached importance to talent policies since a long time ago. I believe the Shenzhen Advanced Study and Training Institute of Talents will serve as a think tank for the gathering of top-level talents in Shenzhen.”

To impellent the talent policy, encourage employers to introduce and train talents, the ceremony issued the “Talent Scout Award” to eight units with outstanding achievements in talent introduction, among which SUSTech won the highest reward of 2.9 million yuan.

At the ceremony, the five new academicians introduced by SUSTech, Harbin Institute of Technology, Shenzhen and Tsinghua-Berkeley Shenzhen Institute were each granted 1 million yuan job fund; Shenzhen General Institute of Architectural Design and Research, the unit that has cultivated Academician Meng Jianmin, was awarded 5 million yuan for its contribution in academician cultivation.

Moreover, the housing problem of high-level talents was solved. The newly introduced five academicians were given keys for 200-square-meter rent-free housing.

After the Unveiling Ceremony of the Shenzhen Advanced Study and Training Institute of Talents, the Meeting of the Leading Group of Talent Work of Shenzhen was held, at which the leadership from the Leading Group listened to reports from the Organization Department of the CPC Shenzhen Municipal Committee, Shenzhen Municipal Human Resources and Social Security Bureau, Shenzhen Municipal Commission of Scientific and Technological Innovation, Shenzhen Education Bureau, the Health and Family Planning Commission of Shenzhen Municipality, Shenzhen Housing and Construction Bureau, etc.

Newly Introduced Academicians

Yu Dapeng, academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences, has been recently introduced by SUSTech as a full-time academician and is currently Chair Professor at the Department of Physics of SUSTech. Academician Yu, originally serving as Professor at School of Physics, Peking University and Director of the Electron Microscopy Laboratory of Peking University, has been long engaged in the study on the key basic scientific problems in nanowire materials. He has made important contributions to China’s advanced research on nanowire materials.

Chen Xiaofei, academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences, has been recently introduced by SUSTech as a full-time academician and is currently Chair Professor at the Department of Earth and Space Sciences of SUSTech. Academician Chen, previously working as Professor and Executive Director of the School of Earth and Space Sciences at the University of Science and Technology of China, mainly studies the basic theories and calculation methods of seismology and its application in the imaging of the interior structure of the Earth, earthquake-prevention and disaster alleviation and resource exploration. He was once awarded subsidies from “The National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars” and the Science and Technology Progress Award of the Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation. He was elected Academician of the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics in 2015.

Liu Ke, a foreign member of the Australian Academy of Technology and Engineering (elected in 2015), has been introduced by SUSTech as a full-time developed country academician and currently serves as Chair Professor at the Department of Chemistry of SUSTech. Academician Liu has been long engaged in the study of energy resources. He was originally Deputy Director and Principal Scientist of the National Institute of Clean-and-low-carbon Energy. He once also worked as Gasification Platform Technology Leader & Principal Scientist of GE Global Research Center. He once won a National Emerald Honors Special Recognition Award and a PITT Annual Award for Innovation in Coal Conversion.
