With new undergraduate students arriving at Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) today, the new dormitories will be seeing their first residents. Many departments across SUSTech have been hard at work over the summer break to prepare for the incoming students, with signs to guide people throughout our luscious campus.
The new dormitories provide a fresh life for incoming students, with 11 dormitory buildings hosting over 6400 students. The doctoral residence hall can host over 1600 students and the masters students hall can host nearly 800 students.
Located in the mountains of SUSTech, the students will be enveloped in nature. With plenty of public art throughout the different dormitory buildings, this gorgeous environment will cover student’s every need, from accommodation to recreation and from study to restaurants. The new spaces will provide a platform for plenty of extracurricular activities that will incorporate SUSTech’s integration of science, technology and the liberal arts. The public areas will become an important area for the residential colleges to share their knowledge and wisdom with SUSTech students.
The pedestrian bridges between dormitory buildings protect the natural environment while connecting residential areas and other areas of vitality.
SUSTech students enter different residential colleges when they first arrive on campus. Each residential college has a different gift for the incoming students, including stationery sets and daily necessities to ease their passage into student life at SUSTech. All the freshmen of the class of 2023 will be entering dormitory building 11, regardless of the residential college they join.
Every dormitory building has been built to exacting standards, ensuring that students live a comfortable and convenient life at SUSTech. The bunk beds allow students to study before heading to bed, with the twin-shared ladder doubling as storage. The air-conditioning is supplemented by front and rear fans that will help students during the hot and humid days that can linger in Shenzhen. Each dormitory will have its own independent Wi-Fi network to enhance the extensive Wi-Fi coverage that SUSTech already provides across campus.
To support the security and safety of the students, a range of security measures are being implemented, including window and door stoppers, anti-theft nets and facial recognition access control systems.
SUSTech has continued to reform and innovate its residential college system in order to maximize student’s full potential and growth. SUSTech focuses on the practical needs of student’s lives to help them develop into well-rounded future leaders for the new era and the Class of 2023 will help create the next page of the SUSTech story.
Prior to the students arriving at SUSTech, President Chen Shiyi fronted a website designed specifically for the incoming students, where he welcomed the freshmen and encouraged them to reach for their dreams. The website also provided information on a wide range of other issues including the six different residential colleges and registration arrangements.
