On November 1, 2016, a delegation of five members, including Chair Hu Yijie and Vice Chair Zhang Xinying of the Department of College English, School of Foreign Languages, Shenzhen University (SZU), visited the Language Center of Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech). Kathy O’Sullivan, Chair of the Language Center, SUSTech, exchanged ideas with her peers from SZU on issues such as teaching and research.
In the talks, O’Sullivan introduced the Language Center. The mission of the center is promoting the globalization of SUSTech through different English education programs, and offering teachers and students high-level teaching, the best opportunities for exercise and favorable learning environment through high-quality teachers, as well as the latest teaching materials and techniques, she said.
The delegation also attended the classes given by Zhang Xinting and Joseph at the special classroom of the Language Center in No. 1 teaching building. Joseph taught students summary writing with a Halloween-related article; in a way of jigsaw reading, Zhang fragmented reading materials, making students read and analyze fragments and discuss in groups, thereby integrating information logically, restoring the article, further deepening their understanding of the article and improving their reading ability. This method enhanced the involvement of students and impressed listeners deeply.
SZU’s teachers spoke highly of the center’s English courses, and showed strong interest in the small class teaching mode of the center, the characteristic layout of the special classroom, the integration of teaching with research, etc. The two sides expected to further cement cooperation and improve commonly.
