In order to increase the number of our university’s National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) projects and improve the project application quality, the Office of Research of SUSTech held the 2017 NSFC Project Application Mobilization Meeting. Nearly 100 people attended the meeting, including President Chen Shiyi, Vice President Tang Tao, leaders of relevant schools and departments, and teachers. Zhou Hui, Director of the Office of Research of Peking University was invited to attend the meeting. The meeting was chaired by Zhao Yusheng, Director of the Office of Research.
At the meeting, Chen Shiyi delivered a mobilization speech. From the development of our university’s NSFC project application in the past five years, the highlights of this year’s NSFC project application, and the characteristics of our university’s scientific research development, he recalled the progress of SUSTech in the innovation of research system and mechanism, the optimization of research environment, the building of academic atmosphere, and the recruiting of innovation talents. He also pointed out that SUSTech still lags behind other well-known colleges and universities in the number of NSFC projects. He required our university’s administrative departments and research personnel to optimize and gradually carry out the implementation plan, effectively improve our university’s NSFC project application quantity and quality, and achieve greater results in 2017. He also encouraged young teachers to actively participate in the application for talent class projects and strive to make further breakthroughs in the application for projects of National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, National Science Fund for Excellent Young Scholars, and Innovative Research Groups in 2017.
Zhou Hui, based on years of experience in NSFC project management as well as the data on projects of National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholar and National Science Fund for Excellent Young Scholars of Peking University and the whole country, interpreted the new implications of distinguished young scholars and excellent young scholars from the perspective of a scientific research manager.
In 2016, Prof. Liu Junguo of SUSTech School of Environmental Science and Engineering received financial support for his research project from the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholar, National Natural Science Foundation of China. This talent class project was the first of its kind that the SUSTech has successfully got approved since its establishment. Based on his years of NSFC project application experience, Prof. Liu Junguo systematically explained to the attendees how to prepare high-quality application materials.
Finally, Zhao Yusheng made concluding remarks. He hoped that various school and departments as well as researchers attach great importance to the NSFC project application work and actively make meticulous preparations. He required that individuals, schools and departments, and the Office of Research make joint efforts to improve the application quality, create a good basic research atmosphere, and further enhance our university’s academic level and competitiveness.
