Nanshan Vice District Chief Visits SUSTech

In the long term strategic vision, cooperation between the government and universities gives new beginnings to economic growth in the high tech industry and in the next stage.

On Feburary 13 2017, Mr. Xie Bingwen, Vice Chief Executive of Nanshan District of Shenzhen municipality, paid a visit to SUSTech and delivered a speech on the local government’s research, teaching and technology transfer policies, and relations with SUSTech in 2017.

Council Chairperson Guo Yurong, President Chen Shiyi, and Vice President Wang Duoxiang met with Mr. Xie Bingwen. Council Chairperson Guo welcomed the delegation and expressed gratitude for the local government’s strong long term support.

President Chen briefed the guests about SUSTech in general. He also discussed the university’s high-level of basic research and applied basic research platforms, as well as research teams and breakthroughs made in 2016. Last year, SUSTech won 197 technology projects at all levels, had total funds of 372 million yuan; published 783 academic papers and applied for 171 patents. It was also ranked third in Nature Index growth and presented 35 high-tech projects at the China Hi-Tech Fair, among many other achievements.

Nanshan is one of the six districts comprising Shenzhen. It encompasses the southwest area of the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone and has a population of 1.08 million. In 2013, the district of Nanshan’s local GDP output exceeded 320 billion RMB. Having adopted a strategy combining the high-tech industry with research and higher education, Nanshan District aims to become Shenzhen’s Silicon Valley.
