Over the weekend, five Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) students traveled north to Guangdong Polytechnic Normal University to take part in the FLTRP ETIC Cup for the first time, organized by the Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press. Over 400 students from more than 50 universities across Guangdong Province participated in this prestigious competition. All five SUSTech students were highly ranked in the competition.

Class of 2020 student Shang Linyang was ranked 3rd among science & engineering majors and 23rd overall, while also coming 3rd in the English writing competition and first among SUSTech students. Class of 2022 students Zhang Bowen and Gui Xiaoyan claimed 2nd prizes in the reading contest, with Jiang Ruoqi finishing 3rd in the reading contest and Tu Yichuan picking up 3rd in the writing contest. Center for Language Education (CLE) lecturer Liu Lisha and teaching assistant Wen Xing mentored the students ahead of the competition.

SUSTech has always placed great importance on its students’ ability to communicate in a cross-cultural manner, and thus encourages them to participate in relevant competitions to enhance their global outlook. CLE has spent a significant amount of time selecting and mentoring students for these competitions, which has consistently seen it receive top results in a wide range of foreign language competitions.

CLE Director Li Yuan said that SUSTech students would continue to improve their critical thinking skills and cultural accomplishment through studying English learning and participating in related competitions. She hoped that they would make more contributions to the cultivation of innovative talents at SUSTech.

The FLTRP ETIC Cup is jointly sponsored by the College English Course Teaching Steering Committee of Guangdong Undergraduate Universities and the English major sub-committee of the Foreign Language Teaching Steering Committee of Guangdong Undergraduate Universities. It is held annually and is the largest top-level competition in Guangdong province. The FLTRP ETIC Cup seeks to test the students’ English reading and writing ability, regardless of their professional inclination, as it truly demonstrates the English level of university students.
