SUSTech launches innovation winter camp for top STEM middle school students

On 22nd November, Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) launched its “2019 Excellent Middle School Students STEM Innovation Experience Camp.” SUSTech University Council Vice Chairperson Li Fengliang, College of Science Dean Yang Xueming and Teaching Affairs Director Huang Kefu all attended the launch ceremony.

The camp will take place this weekend, with over 270 students being selected from more than 1500 applicants from 22 provinces and cities nationwide. Students will attend scientific lectures, conduct scientific experiments in the laboratories and truly experience the culture of SUSTech. All 18 departments at SUSTech are involved in the camp, working in 6 groups of 3.

University Council Vice Chairperson Li Fengliang welcomed the students, saying that SUSTech is an innovative research university that aims to play a leading role in the development of the nation. He introduced SUSTech’s features and hoped that the students would choose SUSTech when they come to select their preferred destination for tertiary education.

College of Science Dean Yang Xueming talked about his life experience, reflecting on his time as a researcher and scholar. He encouraged the students to lay a solid scientific foundation on the way to finding their own path, while engaging their critical thinking and problem solving skills. Professor Yang Xueming inspired them to constantly push past their previous bests to become the innovative future leaders of the new era.

Teaching Affairs Director Huang Kefu spoke about the six features of a SUSTech education, focusing on the personalized curriculum for each student. 

Global Engagement Office Deputy Director Li Xu showed students the plethora of international exchange and cooperation opportunities that SUSTech undergraduate students can avail themselves of, while also discussing the internationalized education of SUSTech.

Center for Language Education Director Li Yuan spoke about the use of English as the primary language of instruction and the role of the Center at SUSTech.

Class of 2020 student Hu Qikun looked back on his own experiences at SUSTech, talking about how he had developed from a freshmen student to an experienced researcher.
