On December 19, Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) launched its expert art & culture committee. SUSTech University Council Chairperson Guo Yurong, Vice Chairperson Li Fengliang, and Vice President Lu Chun were joined by the 11 members of the expert art & culture committee (expert committee). SUSTech University Council Vice Chairperson Li Fengliang chaired the meeting.

SUSTech University Council Chairperson Guo Yurong welcomed the committee members, saying that the expert committee would support the development of SUSTech’s talent pipelines. The cultivation of top innovative talents requires an understanding of art & culture, which takes time. She pointed out that SUSTech needs to take the initiative of promoting cultural values among scientific and technological leaders of the new era. Chairperson Guo Yurong said that the expert committee would imbue the culture at SUSTech with an inspirational and artistic atmosphere.

China Federation of Literary and Art Circles Vice-President Pan Lusheng explained the importance of developing art within campus culture is vital, and the determination that SUSTech had shown in achieving this has inspired him. Campus culture develops organically to better serve faculty and students, so different sorts of installations need to be carefully considered to allow for the future growth of SUSTech. He promised that the expert committee would work hard to promote the organic integration of science, technology, art, and culture into the SUSTech community.

Following the launch, the expert committee held its first meeting, chaired by Pan Lusheng. SUSTech University Council Vice Chairperson Li Fengliang gave the first report, analyzing the needs of SUSTech when it came to the cultural and artistic development of SUSTech. He pointed out that high-quality art and cultural development are vital to building world-class universities, regardless of the type of university.

Guangdong Writers Association Chairman Jiang Shuzhuo stated that campus culture needs to maintain a consistent cultural theme that matches the overall philosophy of the university. They must be integrated and remain an integral part of the branding to showcase campus culture to a wider audience.

Other committee members recommended the use of digital or mobile terminals, international influences, encouraging cultural associations run by students, supporting faculty activities, the writing of a university song, and the proper use of art that reflects the relationship between SUSTech & Shenzhen.

In the meeting, Pan Lusheng said that the committee members should establish special groups with relevant departments to focus on the integration of science, technology, culture, and arts. They need to find a unifying direction to finalize the concepts for campus culture at SUSTech.

Vice President Lu Chun thanked the experts for coming and pointed out the importance of SUSTech-specific cultural monuments that build brand recognition. These distinctive features would help develop a positive cultural atmosphere. Vice President Lu Chun expected the expert committee to provide more targeted suggestions soon.
