The Department of Earth and Space Sciences (ESS) at Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) has recently had its bachelor’s degree in geophysics approved for authorization.

On December 20, SUSTech Vice President Zhang Dongxiao and Teaching Affairs Deputy Director Professor Ye Fei attended the field evaluation report meeting on behalf of SUSTech. ESS Head Chair Professor Chen Xiaofei chaired the meeting with the expert group, led by the Ministry of Education (MoE) Teaching Steering Committee on Geophysics Director Li Fei.

SUSTech Vice President Zhang Dongxiao briefed the expert group on SUSTech’s development path, covering a wide range of areas. He welcomed the valuable feedback from the expert group on the development of the geophysics discipline at SUSTech.

ESS Head Chen Xiaofei welcomed the guidance of the expert group and spoke about his department.

ESS Vice Head Zhang Wei outlined the tasks and processes of the review. He covered many topics in his report, and the expert group asked many questions that were answered by ESS Head Chen Xiaofei and Vice Head Zhang Wei.

The expert group reviewed the teaching facilities and research facilities on campus, interviewed faculty and student representatives, and observed professional courses being undertaken. They also interviewed key members of the faculty and reviewed the materials used to teach undergraduate and postgraduate students. Following their in-depth exchanges, the expert group approved the bachelor’s degree in geophysics, while recommending some improvements.

Ministry of Education (MoE) Teaching Steering Committee on Geophysics Director Li Fei gave the final opinions. The expert group had decided that ESS has reached the standards required for the bachelor’s degree in geophysics.

ESS Head Chen Xiaofei and Teaching Affairs Deputy Director Professor Ye Fei thanked the work of the expert group. ESS Head Chen Xiaofei said that in the future, the Department would take advantage of the opinions of the expert group to cultivate high-quality talents with scientific literacy and innovative spirit.
