Humanities and Social Sciences Dean prepares high school students for writing exam

On May 5, School of Humanities and Social Sciences Dean Yuehong CHEN gave a lecture to nearly twenty thousand young men and women across the country on how to best tackle the writing section of the National College Entrance Examination, or gaokao. The live broadcast platform of Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech), in conjunction with China Education Online Group, aimed to help students develop optimal writing strategies for their upcoming exams.

In the past, Dean Yuehong Chen led the Chinese Department at Peking University. He is also an expert of the State Council Special Allowance and the chief expert and was the chief expert on the 2015 National Social Science Project entitled, “National Language Proficiency Research and Test System Classification Construction.”

In his lecture, Dean Yuehong CHEN analyzed the ideas behind the gaokao and the writing section. He explained the essential points needed to obtain high scores. He started his explanation and pointed out that candidates should use adult thinking in organizing their writing.

Dean Yuehong CHEN looked at some of the previous questions as well as current issues to explain how to accumulate relevant materials and practically prepare topics. He highlighted his original “1331” writing mode suitable for the gaokao.

He attracted attention through his dry wit, with parents and students across the country interacting with the Dean to hear his detailed responses to a wide range of answers.

At the end of his lecture, Dean Yuehong CHEN provided a briefing about SUSTech and encouraged potential candidates to plan their time sensibly as they prepare for the gaokao.
