On June 21, nine graduate students from the Department of Earth and Space Sciences (ESS) at Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) traveled to Xiamen to observe the recent solar eclipse. They were joined by Professor Shengwi YE, Associate Professor Jian YANG, and Associate Professor Zhicheng JING.
The observation activity was hosted on Baicheng Beach, one of the most popular beaches in China. The SUSTech community in attendance prepared proper viewing infrastructure for passing onlookers to view the eclipse without damaging their eyes.
SUSTech remains highly committed to providing abundant practical learning opportunities for its students. The traveling postgraduate students applied science communication skills to explain astronomical knowledge to Xiamen citizens.
Professor Shengyi YE said that the activity allowed students to experience scientific knowledge, while also imparting that knowledge on others. He worked with Associate Professor Zhicheng Jing to collaborate with the Xiamen Science and Technology Museum in a series of science communication activities.
