On August 25, the High School Affiliated to Southern University of Science and Technology (HSAS) welcomed the first class of 700 students to the SUSTech campus. The high school students came to attend a science camp that allowed them to experience study and life on campus. SUSTech Vice President Dongxiao ZHANG attended the summer camp, along with other department leaders and educators.

HSAS Principal Peidong WANG welcomed the students and hoped that they would develop a thorough understanding of life at SUSTech. The academicians, experts, and scholars would provide the students with cutting-edge academic experience while they are on campus. She encouraged the high schoolers to continue looking ahead and exploring scientific pathways. “I believe that you will develop into your best selves through HSAS.”

SUSTech Vice President Dongxiao ZHANG welcomed the students and spoke about SUSTech’s history. He encouraged them to persevere in their studies and develop into the innovative leaders of tomorrow.

Shenzhen Institute of Quantum Science and Engineering (SIQSE) Dean Dapeng YU talked about his learning experience. He recommended that students look inside themselves to find their passions and talents, as they become the next generation of leaders.

School of Innovation and Entrepreneurship Dean Ke LIU gave a lecture. He discussed how to solve the ecological problems associated with pollutions from coal and chemical fertilizers. He reminded students that they must always ask questions on the path of discovery, inquiry, and investigation.

As part of the camp, HSAS students visited laboratories and library, while observing a variety of aeromodelling and robotics performance and student clubs’ introduction.

The first class of HSAS students is referred to as the “first honorary students.” Their walk through SUSTech to develop insights into campus culture serves as a vital component of HSAS educational experience. HSAS aims to provide innovative science and technology education and to establish a research-oriented high school that cultivates outstanding young talents for the society and future.
