On January 12, 2021, Qikun XUE, President of Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) and Honorary Chairman of the Academic Committee of the High School Affiliated to Southern University of Science and Technology (HSAS), visited the School to give a speech and observe the New Year’s welcoming performance. Peidong WANG, Principal of HSAS, accompanied him and reported on the day to day running of the high school.

President XUE visited the student classrooms, teachers’ offices, laboratories, the student and staff canteens, and student dormitories of the School to learn more about its infrastructure, educational facilities, and school development. He affirmed the achievements of the School and said that he would continue to give support to HSAS. 

Later, President XUE gave a speech titled “Strong and Happy Dream Chasers” to nearly 800 teachers and students. He talked about the quantum anomalous Hall effect (QAHE) which won him the first prize at the 2018 National Science and Technology Awards. He explained QAHE to students with a vivid analogy.

Then, he talked about his understanding and know-how in the process of scientific research based on his experiences, from various obstacles he encountered while studying in Japan, to the practice of correcting manuscripts 80 times to give his research report clearly and fluently in English. He managed to overcome these difficulties in a calm manner and with strong determination. He said that it is precisely these experiences that have made him strong-willed and optimistic about work and life. He encouraged the students to live up to their goals, dare to innovate, strive for excellence, be optimistic, and fearless when difficulties arise.

This was President XUE’s first speech at the School since he became President of SUSTech. After listening to the speech, the students said that it made them more determined towards achieving their life goals.

Ling ZHANG, Director of the Office of Communications & Public Relations (CPR), Qingsong LIU, Chair Professor of the Department of Ocean Science and Engineering (OSE), Zheng XUE, Director of the Office of Students Affairs, Baoyi BI, Director of Arts Center and Yunhao FU, Lecturer of the Department of Mathematics also attended the event.
