On January 6, 2021, Weizhong WANG, Rugui CHEN, and other municipal leaders attended the Shenzhen Science and Technology Awards ceremony. Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) won 8 awards, the best achievement since its formation. SUSTech President Qikun XUE, along with other award winners were invited to the event.

SUSTech won five Natural Science Awards. Haizhou LU’s research team won the first prize, while Bin TAN, Shuming CHEN, Linni JIAN, and Yongye LIANG all won second prize awards. Junguo LIU and Dazhi SUN’s teams won the first and second prizes of the Science and Technology Progress Awards respectively.

The Natural Science Award is presented to individuals who have made great contributions to basic researches and applied basic researches. Professor Haizhou LU’s team won the first prize in this award. They focused on the “electronic transport of topological matter”. The research has developed the quantum theory of all magnetic field electron transport in topological matter and predicted the new Fermi arc mechanism of the three-dimensional quantum Hall effect. Many of their research achievements have been published in Physics Review Letters and other top international physics journals.

Bin TAN, Professor of the Department of Chemistry, Shuming CHEN and Linni JIAN, Associate Professors of the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE), and Yongye LIANG, Associate Professor of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) all won second-place awards for their researches on “asymmetric axial chiral chemistry based on organic catalysis”, “basic research on high efficiency and long life quantum dot light-emitting diodes”, “theoretical research and application of new high-density magnetic field modulation permanent magnet mechanism” and “functionalization and application of conjugated molecular materials” respectively.

The Science and Technology Progress Award is presented to organizations or individuals that have made outstanding contributions to the application and promotion of advanced scientific and technological achievements and the completion of major scientific and technological plans and projects. Junguo LIU, Chair Professor of the School of Environmental Science and Engineering (ESE), won the first prize for his project on “key technology and application of urban river ecological restoration”. The research has completed the R & D and application of ecological restoration technology for Maozhou River tributaries and many domestic rivers. His major work “Introduction to Ecological Restoration is the “foundation document” of ecological restoration standards issued by the Society for Ecology Restoration in 2019. Dazhi SUN, Associate Professor of MSE, won the second prize for the project of “R & D and application of highly effective antifogging, disinfection and bacteriostasis products based on nanodispersion technology”.
