On February 8, 2021, Yurong GUO, University Council Chairperson of the Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech), and President Qikun XUE led a team to visit the faculty, students, and staff staying at the University during the Spring Festival vacation, and distributed new year supplies. Fengliang LI, University Council Vice Chairperson, Dongxiao ZHANG, Vice President and Provost, and Yusheng ZHAO, Acting Vice President, also joined the visit.

This Spring festival, SUSTech faculty members and students adhered to calls from the Shenzhen government to not travel due to the current pandemic, unless it was essential. As a result, the number of  university members staying in Shenzhen reached a record high. Yurong GUO and Qikun XUE thanked everyone for their support and the preparation work of the staff during the winter vacation and extended their best wishes for the New Year.

Yurong GUO and other leaders of SUSTech visited the student dormitories, the College of Engineering Building, the SUSTech University Center (Dining Hall), and the Administration Building. Chairperson GUO thanked the faculty and students who decided to stay in the University during the festive period and that their decision reflects a sense of responsibility, a trait also echoed by SUSTech. As a gesture of gratitude, the SUSTech leaders presented New Year gifts to the students. She finished by wishing everyone well, saying “I wish you all greater achievements in the Year of the Ox!”

President Qikun XUE led a team to visit the undergraduate dormitory, the security control room, the Department of Mathematics of the College of Science, the Department of Finance of the College of Business, and the Laboratory Animal Research Center. He spoke to students and faculty, where he thanked them all for staying in Shenzhen during the Spring Festival and discussed what their plans were for the holidays. He encouraged everyone to continue working hard in the development of the University and cultivate the students into top-notch innovative talents.

Professor Yongye LIANG of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) also decided to remain in Shenzhen for the Spring Festival holiday. He said that many engineering faculty members, along with himself, have moved their laboratories into the new engineering building. This year’s winter vacation has provided more opportunities for students and teachers to spend extra time in the lab. He noted that it has become more lively and in such an atmosphere, he feels very happy to be working there every day.

Chaofan WANG, a 2019 graduate student in the Department of Physics, is from Hebei province. Due to the current pandemic, she has followed instructions by the Government to not travel during this time. She said, “I am very grateful for the gift bag given to us by our school. I hope I can continue my efforts and make more meaningful achievements in scientific research in the New Year.”

Yida DONG, a 2017 undergraduate student of Shuli College, said: “I want to speed up on my graduation project during my winter vacation. I received warm blessings from the University today. I feel very appreciative and it also inspires me to make a new breakthrough in my academic career in the New Year.”

To allow the faculty and students to enjoy a special Spring Festival in SUSTech, the University has organized a series of activities, such as the “Love in the New Year” visit, and Chinese New Year dumpling games. There are also dinner themed activities, along with film exhibition activities and so on.
