As SUSTech bids farewell to another semester, it provides an opportunity for downtime and reflection over the summer period. Throughout the academic year, both the students, faculty members, and staff of the University have worked tirelessly in their pursuit of academic, scientific, and technological success. It’s what motivates them every day and this enthusiastic spirit can be felt throughout the campus. This is what makes us, as SUSTechers, unique.

Therefore, we look back at the first half of 2021 and relive some of the memorable moments that the people of SUSTech and welcomed guests have shared with us.

“And so with the sunshine and the great bursts of leaves growing on the trees, just as things grow in fast movies, I had that familiar conviction that life was beginning over again with the summer.”

– F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby

“Make the most of yourself….for that is all there is of you.”

– Ralph Waldo Emerson

Through their intense class schedules, scientific research, and extra-curricular activities, the members of SUSTech have once again reflected their hard work and dedication. Even though the summer has arrived, for many students and their mentors, they continue their educational experience by participating in summer courses and exchange programs in various academic universities and institutions around the country. For them, there is no better way for them to invest their time than through self-improvement.

SUSTech held and celebrated many successful events on campus throughout the past few months. This included its 10th anniversary, the hosting of the ASC Student Supercomputer Challenge, a performance by the Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra, and its first Lychee Cultural Festival.

Furthermore, scholars and students of SUSTech also made significant breakthroughs and advances in scientific research. These results were published in some of the top international academic journals such as Nature, Science, Journal of American Chemical Society (JACS), Advanced Materials, Earth and Planetary Science Letters, etc.

Our academicians and students were also recognized for their contributions to scientific research and technological breakthroughs. They also celebrated winning various academic competitions, both nationally and internationally.

This included Xueming Yang’s scientific discovery that was named one of China’s top 10 scientific advances of 2020, SUSTech Professor Bin TAN’s team winning the first prize of the Natural Science Award, and a team of undergraduates that won the first prize in the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) International Conference.
