On November 19, 2021, the Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) held its 7th Fall Semester Sports Meeting at the Green Pine Capital Stadium. Throughout the day, 1,068 contestants and 32 teams participated in 93 different events.
Fengliang LI, University Council Chairperson, Qikun XUE, President of SUSTech, heads of various colleges and departments, medical staff, faculty members, and students attended the event.
Ling ZHANG, member of the University Council and Director of the Office of Communication and Public Relations (CPR), presided over the opening ceremony.
Chairperson Fengliang LI announced the start of the sports meeting. He said that the games provide a platform for members of SUSTech to display their sporting acumen. The goal of the sports meeting is to contribute to educating youth through sports practice, which requires mutual understanding with a spirit of friendship, solidarity, and fair play. He wished everyone success in their participating events throughout the day.
Students escorted the national flag, the University banner, and the University badge into the stadium and were followed by participating members and teams in an orderly fashion. They received raucous applause from the guests in attendance.
President Qikun XUE also spoke at the opening ceremony. In his remarks, he said that SUSTech attached great importance to sports and that it is fundamental for cultivating and improving students’ abilities.
He noted that all first-class universities have first-class participation in sports. He said that SUSTech has developed comprehensive physical education courses and provides top-class sporting facilities for everyone to avail of at the University.
He encouraged students to participate in more physical activities so that they enjoy a better life in the future.
During the opening ceremony, various clubs and organizations from the University entertained the audience with different acts. This included performances by the tennis club, the taekwondo club, and a dragon dance by members from the College of Science.
This year, the competitions were exceptionally intense, and individual and group winners were awarded in four categories, including Residential College group, Postgraduate Student Group, University Faculty and Staff Group, and University Affiliated Hospitals Group.
The Fall Semester Sports Meeting was hosted by the Sports Center at SUSTech and co-organized by the Office of Students Affairs, the Graduate School, the Student Union, and the Office of the Affiliated Hospital of SUSTech.
