On December 28, the winners of the 22nd China Patent Awards were announced. Dazhi SUN, Associate Professor of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech), won the China Patent Excellence Award for his invention, entitled “Star/multi-arm block copolymer purposes in preparation contains the mixture of nanoparticle”.

After the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) outbreak, Prof. Dazhi SUN and his team used the technology disclosed in the patent to develop nanomaterial products such as anti-fogging alcohol wipes and sprays for goggles, which solved the problem of medical staff wearing goggles where fogging would affect their vision. As a result, he won the second prize at the Shenzhen Science and Technology Progress Awards in 2020.

Prof. SUN and his team’s work on developing these new products helped front-line healthcare workers in the earlier epidemic stages in the fight against COVID-19.

Established in 1989, the China Patent Award is the highest award in the field of intellectual property in China. It is co-hosted by the State Intellectual Property Office of China and the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).
