On February 27, the unveiling ceremony of the Shanghai Sheshan National Geophysical Observation and Research Station (Sheshan Station Research Station) took place at the University.
Cheng QI, Deputy Director of the Department of Science and Technology of the China Earthquake Administration (CEA), Hongfang LI, Director of the Shanghai Earthquake Administration, Jianchun WU, First-Level Inspector, Hongwei FANG, Vice President and Provost of SUSTech, Xiaofei CHEN, Head of the Department of Earth and Space Sciences at SUSTech, and Yongshun CHEN, Dean of the Department of Ocean Science and Engineering at SUSTech, attended the event.
During the ceremony, Cheng QI announced the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST)’s approval of SUSTech as a co-supporting entity of the National Geophysical Observation and Research Station.
He noted his hopes for both sides to work together and take advantage of each other’s expertise in various fields, focusing on scientific research breakthroughs, highlighting marine seismic observation and earthquake prevention and disaster risk reduction.
Hongfang LI said that the modernization of earthquake prevention and disaster risk reduction needs the assistance of science and technology and the support.
The Sheshan Station Research Station will play an important role as an innovative platform in developing earthquake prevention and disaster risk reduction technology, set the benchmark for national field stations and scientific research bases, and make more significant contributions to advancing science and technology in monitoring seismic activity.
Hongwei FANG noted the historical importance for SUSTech and the Shanghai Earthquake Administration to jointly construct the Sheshan Station Research Station.
He said that SUSTech would promote the development of this national research platform, provide support through its disciplines and talents, and cooperate with the Shanghai Earthquake Administration to build the Sheshan Field Station into an important scientific research platform featuring marine seismic observation and coastal seismology.
In November 2021, MOST approved SUSTech as one of the joint construction units of the Sheshan Station Research Station.
The station has published more than 60 SCI papers, three professional monographs, applied for dozens of patents, and has achieved successful results in the research and development and observation of marine geophysical instruments and the detection of dense arrays in metropolitan areas.
