The 2022 APAC HPC-AI Competition Award ceremony was recently held at the 18th SupercomputingAsia 2023 (SCA23) conference in the Singapore Expo Convention and Exhibition Centre.
A student supercomputing team from the Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) was invited to participate in the conference. They included graduate students Zunyao MAO and Xuxuan YUAN, undergraduate students Sicheng ZHOU, Shuxin LI from the Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE); and undergraduate students Junhao HU from the Department of Earth and Space Sciences (ESS); and Jianpeng XU, a graduate student from the Department of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE).
Zunyao MAO, Captain of the SUSTech Supercomputing Team, spoke about participating in the competition at the conference. In his remarks, he noted that supercomputers can solve many problems in natural science and AI large-scale computing, and hopes to use high-performance computing technology to help research in other fields to improve productivity and people’s lives.
“The experience of participating in this competition has greatly increased my research interest in this field and broadened my horizons,” said Zunyao MAO.
The team finished second in the competition, and it is the first time that the Supercomputing Team of SUSTech has attended the awards ceremony.
Jianpeng XU was also full of praise for the competition. “Through communicating with members of the SUSTech Supercomputing Team along with experts and scholars in related fields, I have a better understanding of cutting-edge knowledge and application fields of supercomputing, and at the same time, broadened my way of thinking. This has provided new research ideas for my own scientific research direction.”
Sicheng ZHOU also noted that it was a great honor to participate in the SCA23 conference, noting that she had learned a lot of cutting-edge knowledge in the field of high-performance computing, and has the opportunity to communicate with many top scholars and engineers in this field.
“I have learned how high-performance computers can benefit society. In the future, I will strive to combine high-performance computing in my research and make greater contributions,” Junhao HU said in his remarks.
Established in 2019, the SUSTech Supercomputing Team is composed of outstanding students selected from the SUSTech Supercomputing Club. Students are able to cultivate their skills and abilities in the process of independent learning and solving practical problems through competing in various competitions.
The SUSTech Supercomputing Team has won many international awards, including three 1st prizes in the ASC Student Supercomputer Challenge competition, winning the Highest Linpack Benchmark award and placing 3rd in the Supercomputing 2021 (SC21) Student Cluster Competition (SCC), finishing 2nd in the IndySCC Student Supercomputing Competition (IndySCC22), and winning the AI Special Prize and placing 1st in the 4th APAC HPC-AI competition.
The SupercomputingAsia conference is one of the largest and most influential supercomputer conferences in Asia. This conference included academic reports and exchanges in the fields of computer architecture, supercomputing applications, big data, and artificial intelligence.
