On May 12, the inauguration ceremony of the Nanshan Institute, jointly established by the Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) and the Central Committee of China Democratic League (CDL), was held at the University.
Guests in attendance included Daohong ZHANG, Member of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress and Vice Chairman of the Central Committee of the CDL, Xuecheng WANG, Vice Chairman of the Central Committee of the CDL, and Yihuan WU, Vice-Chairperson of the Shenzhen Municipal Committee of the CPPCC.
Members from the SUSTech leadership team attending the signing ceremony included Fengliang LI, University Council Chairperson, Ling ZHANG, University Council Vice-Chairperson, and Xueming YANG, Vice President.
In his remarks, Daohong ZHANG spoke highly of the rapid development of SUSTech. He pointed out that the strategic cooperation agreement between the Central Committee of the CDL and SUSTech is an important step for the two parties to implement a new development concept and help build a new development pattern.
He said that SUSTech is a vibrant young university and will contribute more to educational reform, scientific and technological innovation, and high-level talent training in the future.
Daohong ZHANG emphasized three hopes for the construction of the Nanshan Institute; to focus on promoting the continued development of the country by tackling major issues in society and offering breakthrough solutions; to take advantage of SUSTech’s expertise in cutting-edge disciplines, integrate various research resources both domestically and internationally, bring together top talents from all walks of life to focus on advancing science, technology, and education in the country, and promote the transformation of scientific research results into practical applications; to strengthen cooperation and exchanges by sharing resources and scientific results.
Yihuan WU said that while SUSTech has made outstanding contributions to the development of Shenzhen universities and scientific research, it has also provided talent support for developing Shenzhen. She hopes that SUSTech would continue to build itself into a world-class research university and contribute to the high-quality development of the region and the country.
Chairperson Fengliang LI expressed his gratitude to the Central Committee of the CDL for its strong support of SUSTech and to build a high-level university institute.
He said that this agreement marks the opening of a new chapter in the cooperation between the CDL and SUSTech. He highlighted that it’s an important measure to implement the objectives and tasks set forth at the 20th National Congress of the CPC, to promote the integrated development of education, science, and technology, an important part of SUSTech’s development as a “Double First-Class” university, and to support the high-quality development of Shenzhen’s “dual-district” drive, the region, and the country.
Chairperson LI hopes that through this strategic cooperation agreement, they can make great strides in high-level scientific and technological self-reliance, and build a solid foundation of cooperation and fruitful results.
Fengliang LI and Daohong ZHANG signed the strategic cooperation agreement on behalf of SUSTech and the Central Committee of the CDL, respectively, and jointly unveiled the Nanshan Institute.
Vice-Chairperson Ling ZHANG also briefly introduced the current state of affairs of SUSTech.
After the ceremony, Daohong ZHANG and his delegation met representatives of the SUSTech branch of the Democratic League for exchanges, which included Zhubing HE, Professor of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, Xingyu JIANG, Head of the Department of Biomedical Engineering, and Liyuan ZHANG, Professor of the Department of Physics.
Xuecheng WANG acknowledged the achievements made by the SUSTech branch of the Democratic League, and encouraged everyone to play a leading role in cultivating high-level talents and contributing to the high-quality development of the University.
