On October 9, the International Symposium for Chemical Biology and Omics Analysis was held in Guangming, Shenzhen, under the guidance of the Guangming District Government and the SUSTech Guangming Advanced Research Institute, and organized by the Center for Advanced Light Source of SUSTech.
Hong JIANG, University Council Chairperson, Xueming YANG, Vice President and Dean of the SUSTech Guangming Advanced Research Institute, David W.C. MacMillan, the laureate of the 2021 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, and other top scientists in the field of chemical biology and omics analysis, as well as representatives from enterprises and industry researchers, attended the event.
The symposium focused on the prospective development of basic research in chemical biology and omics analysis, as well as its application of major key technologies in biomedicine and health-related industries, and jointly discussed the future development trends of biomedicine and the healthcare industry.
In her remarks, Chairperson Hong JIANG said that SUSTech has taken it as its mission to attract top-class faculty, cultivate innovative talents, achieve world-class academic results, and promote the application of science and technology. This would benefit both the growth of the nation and Shenzhen’s status as a cutting-edge, inventive, and international metropolis.
She noted that 2023 has been an important year for the construction of a comprehensive national science center in the Greater Bay Area (GBA), and a key year for SUSTech to create new opportunities for its high-quality development.
Chairperson JIANG hopes that this symposium can become a scientific and technological event that promotes rapid and high-quality development in the field of chemical biology, and become a valuable learning opportunity for SUSTech to strive as a “Double First-Class” university and achieve the goals of the 14th Five-Year Plan.
The University will continue to develop high-level talents, accelerate the advancement of scientific research projects deployed in Guangming Science City, and make greater contributions to the construction of a comprehensive national science center in the GBA.
Witnessed by scientists and representatives of enterprises in attendance, Shuhong YU, Chair Professor and Executive Vice Dean of the Guangming Advanced Research Institute of SUSTech, Hong JIANG, Xueming YANG, and special guest David W.C. MacMillan jointly unveiled the plaque of the Guangming Advanced Research Institute of SUSTech.
At the symposium, David W.C. MacMillan shared his academic frontiers with the theme “Micromapping: A new tool of value (hopefully) to chemists and biologists” based on his scientific research progress and results.
Dawei MA, Chair Professor of the Department of Chemistry at SUSTech, Peng CHEN, Director of the Department of Chemical Biology at Peking University (PKU), Ning YAN, founding Dean of Shenzhen Medical Academy of Research and Translation (SMART), Ruijun TIAN, Associate Dean of the Guangming Advanced Research Institute of SUSTech, Lei LIU, Head of the Department of Chemistry at Tsinghua University, Xuechen LI, Associate Dean of the Faculty of Science at the University of Hong Kong (HKU), Peng ZOU, Associate Professor at Peking University, and Shuhong YU also presented reports on their respective research fields at the event.
Afterward, guests in attendance visited SUSTech and held discussions and exchanges with faculty members and students.
The International Symposium for Chemical Biology and Omics Analysis aims to support basic research and innovation in interdisciplinary fields such as chemical biology, life sciences, and omics analysis technology, promote the development of related industries such as life information, biomedicine, and precision medicine, and explore new ideas for the transformation of technological achievements in basic research in the fields of chemistry and life sciences.
