On November 14, Dong XIE, Vice Mayor of Shanghai, and her delegation visited the Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) to learn more about the University’s work in innovative education, talent training, scientific and technological innovation, and technology transfer.

Ping WANG, Deputy Secretary General of the Shanghai Municipal People’s Government, Hong JIANG, University Council Chairperson of SUSTech, Susheng WANG, Chief Financial Officer and General Counsel at SUSTech, and heads of related departments attended the event.

Dong XIE acknowledged the high-quality development of SUSTech since its establishment.

She noted that in just over a decade, SUSTech has embarked on a path of a new type of research university, becoming one of the youngest “Double First-Class” universities in China. It has achieved remarkable results in the cultivation of talents, serving local and regional economic and social development, and the construction of basic disciplines.

She hoped to learn from SUSTech’s advanced experience and inspire Shanghai’s innovative core of higher education.

In her remarks, Chairperson Hong JIANG gave a brief introduction to the measures, practices, and achievements of SUSTech in building an independent talent training system, serving high-level science and technology, and supporting and meeting major national strategies and needs for regional economic and social development.

She added that she hopes to learn more from Shanghai, focusing on exchanges and discussions on common issues in higher education reform and innovation, and learn from each other to help SUSTech embark on a more stable path for future development.

Susheng WANG outlined SUSTech’s discipline construction, talent team, student training, and other areas to the guests.

Li LIU, Director of the Office of Planning & Development and the Office of Major Projects, discussed the layout of basic research at SUSTech and the integration of industry, education, and research.

Dong XIE and her delegation were also given a tour of the University, visiting the SUSTech exhibition of development and achievements and learning about the construction of campus facilities.

Other guests in attendance at the event included Yaming ZHOU, Director of the Shanghai Municipal Education Commission, Shiyan CHEN, Deputy Director of the Shanghai Municipal Development and Reform Commission, Changlin ZHENG, Deputy Director of the Shanghai Municipal Finance Bureau, Zhenrong SUN, Deputy Director of the Shanghai Municipal Education Commission, Yiying ZHONG, Deputy Director of the Education Bureau of Shenzhen Municipality, and representatives of related departments at SUSTech.
