From November 24 to 26, the 8th Soft Robotics Symposium on Basic Theory and Key Technology and Soft Robotics Innovation Design Competition was held at the Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech).

Over 300 experts, scholars, and graduate students from more than 30 universities and scientific research institutions nationwide, along with representatives of industry and enterprises, participated in the event.

They included Xiaoming LI, Vice President of the Great Bay University, Zuankai WANG, Associate Vice President of Research and Innovation at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU), Kuaijin ZHENG, Director of the Nanshan District Talent Bureau, Weijia TAN, Deputy Secretary-General of the Shenzhen Robotics Association, Qinglan GUO, Vice President of the Shenzhen Talent Experts Federation, and scholars such as Junqi LI, Zhe SHI, and Shuhua WANG.

Jiansheng DAI, Chair Professor of the Department of Mechanical and Energy Engineering (MEE), Dean of the Institute of Robotics at SUSTech, and Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, was the Honorary President of the event.

Chuanfei GUO, Professor of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE), along with Qi GE and Hongqiang WANG, Associate Professors of the Department of MEE, served as chairmen of the symposium.

Professor Qi GE presided over the opening ceremony, where Congming FAN, President of the Shenzhen Artificial Intelligence Industry Association (SAIIA), and Chenglong FU, Head of the Department of MEE, delivered opening speeches.

Jiansheng DAI reviewed the history and development of the Soft Robotics Symposium, discussed the development of the Institute of Robotics at SUSTech, and shared new research progress on metamorphic robots.

Zuankai WANG of PolyU, along with Guoying GU, Professor at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Lei REN, Professor at Jilin University, Yihui ZHANG, Professor at Tsinghua University, Xuanlai FANG, Professor at the University of Hong Kong, Tiefeng LI, Professor at Zhejiang University, Xu HOU, Professor at Xiamen University, Jinyou SHAO, Professor at Xi’an Jiaotong University, and Yongan HUANG, Professor at Huazhong University of Science and Technology, were invited to present reports at the symposium and share their latest cutting-edge progress in soft robotics.

This symposium was divided into five sub-venues, with more than 80 experts from universities such as Tsinghua University, Peking University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, the Harbin Institute of Technology, Zhejiang University, Fudan University, Xiamen University, Xi’an Jiaotong University, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, the University of Hong Kong, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and PolyU giving academic reports.

The two-day event attracted a large number of young researchers and students to attend and participate in academic exchanges.

At the same time, a soft robotics innovation design competition was held for graduate students, with nearly a hundred teams from universities across the country participating. A total of 35 teams entered the finals, with 22 of them receiving prizes.

Among them, four teams from Xi’an Jiaotong University, Tianjin University, Tsinghua Shenzhen International Graduate School, and SUSTech stood out and won first prizes.

The Soft Robotics Symposium was sponsored by the Institute of Robotics at SUSTech and SAIIA, and co-organized by the Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Human-Augmentation and Rehabilitation Robotics in Universities, Shenzhen Key Laboratory of Intelligent Robotics and Flexible Manufacturing Systems, Shenzhen Key Laboratory of Bionic Robotics and Intelligent Systems, and the Departments of MEE and MSE at SUSTech.
