“Try the game and make a donation”, as student volunteers encouraged passers-by to raise funds for their Teaching in Countryside Project at the Charity Bazaar of the 3rd SUSTech Philanthropy Week.

To kick-start its annual Philanthropy Week, the Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) held an opening ceremony on December 6, on the Banyan Tree Plaza.

This year’s Philanthropy Week comprised of five activities: a charity-themed exhibition, a charity bazaar, philanthropic donations, an evening dedicated to charity, and lectures.

The launch of the 3rd Philanthropy Week welcomed notable dignitaries representing various associations and governmental sectors, including representatives of the Shenzhen Charity Federation, the Shenzhen Municipal Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), the Shenzhen Civil Affairs Bureau, and the Shenzhen Social Organizations Federation.

On behalf of SUSTech’s leadership team, University Council Chairperson Hong JIANG expressed her gratitude to all corners of society that have long supported the development of SUSTech over the years.

She noted that the annual Philanthropy Week aims to spread the culture of charity, inherit the ethos of kindness, and bring together different charitable associations.

SUSTech has commitment to philanthropic work, and its faculty members and students have made tireless efforts. In total, SUSTech members have established 15 charitable associations. These associations span various fields, including education assistance, rural revitalization, science popularization education, medical aid, and environmental conservation.

Wei LI, Co-Founder of Green Pine Capital Partners Co. Ltd. (GPCP), reminisced about his association with SUSTech. He pledged to further enhance collaborations with SUSTech, aspiring to build it into a world-class research university that leads the forefront of science and technology development, and fostering a culture of innovation and cultivating high-level talents.

In 2017, GPCP made a substantial donation to the University’s Education Fund. Upon the completion of the campus stadium, it was named the Green Pine Capital Stadium in acknowledgment of GPCP’s charitable contribution.

Following the opening ceremony, the guests had the opportunity to explore the charity-themed exhibition and the charity bazaar.

The exhibition centered on showcasing the University’s Education Foundation’s donation projects, funding outcomes, and key accomplishments in 2023. Such resources include the Talents Fund that aim to support young faculty development and cultivation, and the International Exchange Fund that provides financial support to students to attend and participate in international conferences, exchanges, training programs, and other related activities.

It also highlighted the remarkable efforts and contributions of individuals and charitable associations on campus, underlining their significant role in philanthropic work.

The charity bazaar brought together more than 20 charitable associations from both within and outside of the University, demonstrating the positive strides of philanthropic initiatives in Shenzhen. This provided a platform for faculty members and students to familiarize themselves with and engage in charitable projects. It also serves as a channel to connect with a diverse array of public charities and philanthropic foundations within the Greater Bay Area (GBA).
