SUSTech students triumph in National Robot Contest

The finals of the 2023 National University Student Robot Science and Technology Innovation Exchange Camp and Robot Contest took place recently in Rizhao, Shandong Province.

This year’s competition attracted a total of 1,017 works from 431 universities across the country.

Two projects from the Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech), namely “Logistics factory material delivery robot” and “Indoor small automatic cruise omnidirectional robot based on radar system”, both secured first prizes at the event.

Additionally, the project “Nezha II – Multi-mode wheel-legged hybrid mobile robot platform based on parallel mechanisms”, developed by master’s students from the School of System Design and Intelligent Manufacturing and the Department of Mechanical and Energy Engineering, who recently triumphed at the 18th Challenge Cup, were invited to participate in the on-site display.

The “Logistics factory material delivery robot” project is a versatile mobile robot equipped to handle goods, integrating the functionalities of a mobile platform, a mechanical arm, and a pneumatic end to complete a variety of tasks.

The mobile platform enables the robot to navigate freely between locations, while the mechanical arm executes precise maneuvers, and the pneumatic end adds flexibility and mechanical power. It can be applied in fields such as manufacturing, medical, warehousing, and retail, with ongoing improvements anticipating broader usage in the future.

The “Indoor small automatic cruise omnidirectional robot based on radar system” project is an intelligent robot system boasting autonomous navigation and obstacle entry capabilities. Outfitted with a radar sensor for real-time environmental sensing, the robot employs internal algorithms for road planning and obstacle avoidance, with its small size allowing it to move freely around tight spaces and complete various tasks.

The robot holds promising applications in various scenarios and industries, including indoor security, healthcare, warehousing and logistics, catering services, industrial production, smart home education, and environmental monitoring. It offers notable advantages in enhancing efficiency, alleviating the burden of human labor, and improving safety.

 

The “Nezha II – Multi-mode wheel-legged hybrid mobile robot platform based on parallel mechanisms” project introduces a wheel-legged hybrid robot incorporating the strengths of traditional wheeled and pure-legged robots. It boasts a range of stable operating modes to adapt flexibly to diverse environments.

The integrated design of Nezha II, encompassing mechanical components, hardware, software, and algorithms, forms a complete technology stack and barriers, which provides significant advantages in terms of cost and performance when compared to similar robots on both domestic and global scales.

Over the course of three years, the Nezha robot series has applied for eight patents, with six approved. Additionally, the team has published five high-level papers at prestigious conferences or in top journals.

The National University Student Robot Science and Technology Innovation Exchange Camp and Robot Contest, co-sponsored by the Central Committee of the Communist Youth League and the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, serves as a platform for showcasing innovative robotic advancements from across the country.
