On August 25 2017, SUSTech organized the “Residential College Tutors Guidance Meeting for 2017 New Students Training” in order to prepare the professors for the tutoring system, a cornerstone of SUSTech’s model which allows students to adapt faster and more easily to their new life. Director of Residential College Han Wei, Vice Provost Director of Teaching Department Huang Kefu, as well as college tutors and college counselors participated in the General Assembly, which was chaired by Xue Zheng, Director of Student Affairs.
The General Assembly covered multiple aspects of the participants’ responsibilities, including training programs and graded teaching introduction, elective guidance, examinations, and key rules and regulations.
At the meeting, Xue Zheng discussed the importance of the college tutoring system, and hoped to make all the instructors and tutors better trained and prepared to guide their students.
The course was instructed by Huang, who presented the undergraduate training programs, general education curriculum, professional prerequisite course systems, elective process, and more generally how to guide students to select key courses. He provided a lot of information for the tutors, explaining that they had an important role in guiding the students throughout their studies. He pointed out that the mentor system should be based on the students’ interests and personalities, to assist students to take the right courses for them and find their professional direction. The training program helps students to review and consider a variety of professional options, as well as academic ones in the hope of developing their vision for the future. On a more specific level, it also provides assistance to them in areas such as university management, examinations, grading and other key elements of their university life.
“The importance of the mentor is to help students find their focus and their interest, to learn better, and to enhance the development of their personality.” he explains.
During the discussions, the tutors focused on the topic of “GPA and student education” and other key issues, leading to a lively exchange between them, often starting from their own teaching experience, and putting forward many suggestions.
Ms. Han made a concluding speech at the meeting, in which she pointed out that the General Assembly was the first tutor conference, and will be followed by similar training activities in order to constantly improve their work as college instructors. She said that the new adaptive education model is a key focus this new year, and one in which the university professors will have a central role. She said that she hoped that through this training, the tutor teaching system will become a major learning resource to teach students and lay the foundation for the development of the undergraduates.
