On October 18, a delegation headed by Julio Fernández Techera, Rector of the Catholic University of Uruguay (UCU), and Facundo Fernández Guerra, Acting Consul General of Uruguay in Guangzhou, visited the Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech).

Qikun Xue, President of SUSTech, met with the guests on campus.

During the meeting, President Qikun Xue warmly welcomed the Rector and the Acting Consul General’s visit and provided an overview of SUSTech’s recent developments. He specifically mentioned two Uruguayan professors working in SUSTech’s Department of Mathematics. He expressed his sincere gratitude for their contributions to the University, the academic community, and the friendship between the two countries. President Xue expressed expectations for various forms of cooperation between the two universities, serving as a significant bridge in strengthening educational and scientific ties between the two countries. 

Rector Julio Fernández provided a general overview of the Catholic University of Uruguay. He mentioned that SUSTech has achieved remarkable accomplishments in a very short period. Fernández proposed collaboration in various fields, including establishing a joint research center, initiating student exchange, and holding academic seminars to deepen the cooperation between the two universities. 

Acting Consul General Francisco Fernández noted that the relationship between Uruguay and China has been elevated to a comprehensive strategic partnership. Uruguay is firmly committed to close relations with China in trade, industry, education, and other areas to foster mutual understanding and friendship between the two peoples. He assured that the Consulate General of Uruguay in Guangzhou would provide every facilitation for collaborative endeavors.

The delegation also visited the exhibition hall to gain details of SUSTech’s development.
