Deputy Chief Engineer of Beidou No. 3 Satellite Introduces Satellite Navigation System

On April 25, Yang Yuanxi, Chinese Academy of Sciences Fellow and Deputy Chief Engineer of Beidou No. 3 Satellite, delivered a lecture themed “The Present and Future of The Beidou No. 3 Satellite Navigation System”.

Academician Yang Yuanxi has led projects such as “Adjustments of National 2000 GPS Geodetic Control Network of China” and “Combined Adjustments of National Astro-Geodetic Network and Spatial Network,” which have equipped China with world-leading technologies in the geodetic network. He became a fellow of the International Association of Geodesy (IAG) in 2003 and Institute of Navigation (ION) in 2018. He also received the Geoscience Technological Advancement Award by the Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation in 2011.

Yang talked about the military and civilian needs for navigation and location as well as comparing different satellite navigation systems such as GPS from the United States, GLONASS from Russia and GALILEO from the European Union. He then elaborated on the theories of satellite navigation and location, before introducing the history, development, function, application, and future of Beidou Satellite Navigation System. He also demonstrated the prospects of integrated positioning, navigation, and system of Positioning, Navigation, and Timing (PNT). Towards the end of his presentation, he explained the blueprint for the PNT system from deep space to sea bottom.

In the Q&A session, Yang Yuanxi answered several thought-provoking questions from the students. He hoped that SUSTech’s student could work hard and make a great contribution to our country in the future.
