Nature Masterclass at SUSTech: Training on Scientific Writing

Experts from the Springer Nature were invited to SUSTech on January 12 2018 to give a lecture about scientific writing. More than 200 students and faculties attended and Deputy Director Zheng Yan from the SUSTech Research Office chaired the lecture.

During the lecture, Vincent Dusastre, the chief editor of Nature Materials, illustrated what top-tier journal editors look for in manuscripts, with recent examples from Nature publications.

Then the chief editor of Nature Energy, Nicky Dean, introduced the golden rules of writing and structuring a title and abstract to coax the target audience, again using relevant examples and also performing a ‘live edit’ on a volunteer’s Abstract.

After the break, the associate editor of Nature Reviews Chemistry ,David Schilter discussed the editorial process and peer review.

The lecture concluded with the interaction session, where the students and faculties had the unique chance to discuss with those experts and gained the significant knowledge about scientific paper writing.
