Recently, the 2018 Munich Re Cup, an actuarial mathematics competition for college students, announced the results from its exams earlier this year. Three SUSTech students, Lu Quanlin, Yang Ling and He Guanting, were among the top 100 students in the world. Lu Quanlin was the eighth best student in the world, giving him the highest rank in Shenzhen. This was the first time SUSTech’s Department of Finance won first prize in Shenzhen. It was the Department’s first time of hosting the event at the newly-added Shenzhen examination district, where applicant number is the highest around the globe.

The top 50 students around the world came from famous universities like the University of Hong Kong, Renmin University, the University of New South Wales, Fudan University and Shanghai University of Finance and Economics.

China’s financial industry is developing rapidly, and actuarial talents, as leading economic professionals, are scarce in China. The Department of Finance has begun to organize its academic major in actuarial insurance. The educational philosophy of the Department of Finance is connected with that of the best business schools around the world, by tightly integrating its education with industry practice and taking root in the understanding of businesses. The Department seeks to analyze and solve practical problems while providing students with the actuarial training program, “Spring Seedlings.” There are also plans in place to collaborate with relevant associations, provide funding for examinations and strive to cultivate actuaries with a global outlook. The Department is looking to foster actuarial talents in Shenzhen and the Greater Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Bay Area, with a focus on excellent service throughout the country.
