On October 13, 2015, Professor Zhu Bangfen, also a condensed matter physicist and academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences, stepped onto the rostrum of the 35th phase lecture of SUSTC at invitation to give a wonderful report titled Academic Research Starting From the Right Way. The reports was chaired by President Chen Shiyi.
Academician Zhu Bangfen
Zhu Bangfen was elected as academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2003, and became a fellow of Institute of Physics in 2012. Once acting as the visiting professor at many internationally famous universities, now he is the vice president of Chinese Society of Physics and chief editor of Chinese Physics Letters. During his life, he won many grand prizes, including the second prize of state natural science award (1 program), first prize of natural science award of CAS (1 program), second prize of natural science award of CAS ( 2 programs), first prize of the 8th session of .Chinese Excellent Science and Technology Books and distinguished young scholars of Hong Kong Facts Science and Technology Foundation, etc. He together with Mr. Huang Kun established the semiconductor super lattice optical phonons theory, which was named as “Huang-Zhu Model” by the international academic circle and produced relatively great influence in the world.
Site of SUSTC Lecturing Hall
Academician Zhu illustrated the importance of integrity in scientific research with many cases about academic misconducts in China and lectured the “right way” at the grand Lecturing Hall of SUSCT. Hundreds of students and teachers seriously listened to the report and benefited a lot.
Academic Life of A Scientific Research Worker Lies in Academic Reputation
FFP, the acronym of fabrication, falsification and plagiarism, represents the three kinds of academic misconducts, which caused great hazard and academician Zhu vividly compared them to “murdering for money”, “adverse elimination”, “wrecking students”, “killing science” and “killing the world”, which respectively means: wasting academic resources and time; strangling the normal scientific research order; influencing the next generation; and academic misconducts severely damaging the social trust of science.
The supreme is to set up a good moral example, next to which is to build one’s performances and achievements and the next is to write books and theories. Although the author is dead, the three aspects will never perish, so they are immortal. – Zuo Zhuan
Academician Zhu lectured the importance of integrity in scientific research from the perspective of its sociality. He talked about the two corner stones of modern science – logic reasoning and all experimental inspections are based on reality. He criticized the people who distorted the experimental data at will to reach his own research objective. He believed that seeking truth is the fundamental principle of scientific research, for seeking truth has its right and responsibility, and you can never conceal any part of it.
Academic Laws Starting from the Right Way
What is the right way? How should we do to meet the academic norms? To address these problems, academician Zhu expounded them comprehensively, from recording and saving of experimental data to funds application, application awards, signature, publishing and cooperators, and so on. At the same time, he pointed out the responsibility of supervisors to their students. With his personal experience and analysis on typical cases, he vividly illustrated what is the academic norms, and moved the present students and teachers time and again.
A person as brilliant as blossoming flowers needn’t to paint with celebrations
At the end of the report, academician Zhu introduced us some old generation scientists such as Peng Huanwu, Huang Kun and Huang Zuqia, and their valuable qualities – seeking truth rather than fame and wealth, and saving the world. He admonished everyone to be integrate in scientific research and become a fine scientist. Finally, academician Zhu recommended some books on academic norms.
