Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) has made its mark for the fourth time at the China International Hi-Tech Fair (CHTF). This year, it is focusing on its student-designed “Heron” unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). SUSTech Chairperson Guo Yurong was in attendance at Shenzhen’s Convention and Exhibition Center to see the SUSTech stand, which featured a variety of SUSTech scientific and technological innovations.
The Heron UAV had recently returned from its debut appearance at the 12th China International Aviation and Aerospace Exhibition (“Zhuhai Airshow”). Professor Shan Xiaowen spoke glowingly about potential cooperation with a number of UAV manufacturers following the Zhuhai Airshow, and the Heron was the center of attention at CHTF2018.
The technology that attracted most people to the Heron UAV was its vertical take-off and landing ability (VTOL). The VTOL ability means that logistics companies will not need runways if they purchase the Heron UAV. Instead, the drone would be able to take off and land from a single point. This reduces the cost burden for companies.
The new prosthetic leg was another highlight. The “Robot-powered thigh prosthesis” project developed by Dr. Fu Chenglong, an associate professor at Mechanical and Energy Engineering, aims to help disabled people to use their technology to walk. This robot combines a depth camera, EMG signal and pressure sensor to modify the walking environment, so that it will develop a robotic intelligent power to support the thigh prosthesis, which helps the patient to resume normal walking ability.
Guo Yurong said that it was a good chance to showcase the advanced, innovative and cutting-edge scientific research achievements of Southern University of Science and Technology.
CHTF is jointly hosted by several ministries, who have invited enterprises from around China and around the world to show their scientific, technological and innovative developments to the world in a centralized location. It is regarded as a significant commercial platform that allows enterprises and institutions from around the world to connect with each other. This year’s theme was “Innovation-driven Development & Supply Quality Upgrade.
SUSTech’s booth for exhibition is divided into three sections: cultivating innovative talents, leading the development of the city, and activating the power of science and technology. The achievements of the University demonstrate high-level innovative talent training, urban development support services, and innovative scientific research in the fields of artificial intelligence, life health, electronic technology, and new materials.
For example, the facial recognition systems and radar ranging of Dr. Yu Hao, an associate professor at Electronics and Electrical Engineering, attracted the attention of many exhibitors. The face detection and recognition system can be implemented at low cost.
As for SUSTech’s undergraduate students, they have impressed the audiences with the “Ping Pong Robot”, designed and made by the student maker team.
