SUSTech Introduces Student Supervisors to Campus Catering Service

The Office of Campus Services, working with the University Catering Services Center, is introducing restaurant supervisors, in conjunction with the Office of Student Affairs and the SUSTech Student Union. The supervisors will be working to improve the quality of catering at Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) while maintaining SUSTech’s typically high standards of food safety and hygiene. On November 20th, the first group of restaurant supervisors took up their posts.

Providing catering to the SUSTech community is an essential part of servicing the campus. Food health and safety are issues of concern for students and faculty members. The Office of Campus Services attaches importance to the health of the students, so they worked with the Office of Student Affairs and the SUSTech Student Union to form this student supervisor system.

The consultation has resulted in a better understanding of the needs of faculty members and students. The smoothing of communication saw the collection of opinions and suggestions from the SUSTech community in order to improve the quality of catering on campus. The numerous soundings with the campus community saw the development of the supervisor position within each campus cafeteria.

Last week was the first meeting of the first group of student supervisors. The Office of Campus Services, the Office of Student Affairs and the SUSTech Student Union all had representatives attend the meeting. Director of Student Affairs Xue Zheng hoped that the student supervisors would be responsible for maintaining the trust of the SUSTech community while participating in the management of the SUSTech food industry. Director of the Office of Campus Services Li Xinghua hoped that the restaurant supervisors would be responsible individuals that promote relevant issues around campus catering. The Office of Campus Services would also create better conditions for their continual improvement.

All restaurant supervisors are students and thus do not receive any remuneration. The supervisors perform their duties in accordance with the regulations. The supervisors need to be familiar with food and hygiene regulations, wear identity badges when on duty and carry out their tasks at the three cafeterias around campus at lunchtime each day. The supervisors will be required to take feedback, both positive and negative, as well as answer questions. They will also answer telephone comments and report to the Office of Campus Services to propose improvements and suggestions for the restaurants across campus.
