Campus is the  homeland to all members of SUSTC. Green hills and trees reflect her quietness and softness, the gurgling water and frogs croak show her lively and naughty characteristics. In this wonderful homeland, we are enjoying the rain and dew of knowledge, while indulging in her beauty. But the existing building is only the first-phase planning, the future SUSTC campus will be more beautiful. Today, I will take you to explore the secret in advance and have a look at how will our ongoing dream present surprise.

According to the introduction of related personnel form civil construction office, building functions of the second-phase planning of SUSTC campus include classrooms, laboratories, libraries, canteen, buildings for scientific research of full time staff use and student dormitories, the total construction area is 376,987 square meters. Currently the second-phase planning scheme of the campus has been finalized and the bidding work of single buildings has been finished, the school is further adjusting and improving the schemes in accordance with the bid-winning schemes of bid-winning units.

As the experimental field for China’s higher education reform and the special zone of Shenzhen Special Economic Zone, SUSTC considers the international high-level research university as the construction goals, so the targeted design of space should be in accordance with self-positioning and s of the school certainly. The second-phase design of the campus considers constructing the “international intelligence portal and eco-cultural campus” as the goal, and aims at making SUSTC become the node of Shenzhen to  dock international frontier colleges, and forming cultural sites with unique characteristics.

Three main concepts of the campus design are formed: flexible campus, disciplinary community and Lingnan X Park.

Flexible campus is the elastic and adaptable ecological development pattern. The planning starts from the feasibility of green technologies and combines the landscape background with surrounding mountains and waters, the campus functions are distributed in cluster group along the valleys and shadow hills, forming the growing micro units. Each micro unit will retain the original ponds and low-lying wetland as the ecology blisters to collect rainwater and ecological water primarily treated, and form independent rainwater recycling system and ecological water units.

Disciplinary community is the communalization of innovation space. The planning will organize several academic communities based on the teaching-oriented unit settlement to form basic units. As to the space, it will build multi-level sharing platform, integrally layout the sharing platform and community centers for community services and sharing platform for combination of disciplines and configure sports, arts, dining and other functions and facilities with the walking scale as modulus to create a highly composite and systematized sharing innovation and communication networks for SUSTC.

Lingnan X Park refers to the space places with the characteristics of new Lingnan. Construction of buildings of SUSTC will be based on the characteristics of several Lingnan X Parks. Lingnan Parks with different themes will be designed with the park-college structure as the organization mode to highlight local landscape space and cultural identity and form the core system reflecting the campus cultural values.

Optimizing the first-phase layout combined with design concept of the campus, the second-phase planning of the campus will form the “two axes, three galleries and one ring” spatial structure for functions of SUSTC such as teaching, scientific research and life.

The two axes are: the campus academy which is the main axis and the human landscape axis. The campus academy axis considers the great lawn with sparse woods with a width of 60-80 meters as the main feature, on both sides, the round-the-clock rain gallery, landscape sites and facilities are set in combination with different Departments. As to the human landscape axis, art and memorial landscape sites are set combined with functional units of College of Humanities, Sinology Research Institute, Business College, academic exchange centers and so on to from the memorial landscape axis with rich humanism atmosphere .

The three galleries include: Academic Celestial Street, natural landscape gallery and Dasha River landscape gallery. Wherein, the Academic Celestial Street is on the west side of the campus connecting Engineering College, center of SUSTC, the west gate, Life Science Park, laboratory buildings and public teaching buildings, and it connects the square, the sharing platform, coffee house and other public nodes by multi-level and multi-form corridors, which provides a bond for learning, encounter and exchange of teachers and students.

The ring refers to a ring of stream gardens. On the basis of the natural landscape gallery, the complete stream gardens are formed around core functional areas of the campus, it has both landscape and ecological functions.

We can foresee the future of SUSTC campus. It is a large campus with parks everywhere, including 38 hectares country parks, 30 hectares Lingnan botanical gardens, 10 hectares sports parks, 9 hectares memorial parks and 2 km sand-river greenbelt parks and stream gardens.
